"Thoughts" |
There isn’t very much information about this
artist, this could be to add secrecy. Noell does not explain or talk about his
work often, so by they’re being less information about him shows that he may
want to remain mysterious just as he work is. His work is simple but yet so powerful;
this could possibly reflect his personality. After studying his work, his work
displays darkness as well, he could have been through a rough time in his life
hence the type of images he produced, they are not happy and cheerful yet they
are gloomy and mysterious.
DISTANCE
Subjectively I feel this work speaks in so many
ways. It is elegant and very simple; even though it is simple it sends out so
many messages. I thought the studio use and the plain background adds to the
simplicity of this photograph therefore making it much more powerful. This
image makes good use of ambient lighting,
which creates a warmer and softer image; this is how the elegance is created.
This image I believe symbolises femininity and the innocence of woman. It shows
how beautiful, fragile and vulnerable they can be. I thought that it linked in
perfectly with my title of domestic abuse as this image represents an innocent
woman looking up for freedom. The material over the girl could symbolise the
feelings she is going through and how she feel trapped in an abusive
relationship, but through it all she can see hope and freedom, the chance that
one day she will be free and happy. The background is fairly simple, I feel as
though it works well as it is not a solid white background nor a solid black
background but more of a soft grey tone which makes the photograph appear
softer rather than it being malevolent image.
THE SHADOW
I was drawn to the surrealism in the image. The
shadow is over powering the young girl in it. The image creates a secretive
feeing. The entire setting is fairly dark however the model in this image is
wearing white, which then makes her the main focus of the image.
Subjectively I feel that this image is trying to represent unknown fears.
When we are asleep or in the darkness, we do not know who and what is watching
us. The girl appears to be smile and is unaware of what is happening. This
could symbolise that we do not know realise who and what will hurt, our killer
could be our best friend. I was encouraged to draw inspiration from the larger
sale of the shadow, it represent so much good yet so much evil. In my own work
I would like to create images, which may also be black and white to represent
that, That is more to the image, I want the audience too notice the images I
create and make up their own opinion of it.
SADNESS
Again with the image the simplicity creates
the power behind it. The image is photographed from an intimate distance. The young
girl appears no older than 20 possibly in her mid-teens. I believe natural
light was used in this shot as the light appears to be vibrant and but not over
power as an artificial light would. The model appears to be naked and seeking
comfort in her knees she is curled up into a ball in order to hide away from
the world. Only half of her face is exposed, the only half she wants to see.
The other half is hidden away from the world, only she knows about it.
Subjectively I feel as though this image represents a child who is not happy ,
by exploring her body language, the issue appears to be something deeper than
being told off or being grounded. Something more serious has happened to her
hence the lack of clothing. From this is image. In relations to my work, could
imply that either this young girl has been exposed to domestic abuse and
watched her parents fight and argue. Or she herself may be suffering from it
from her parent who may not be looking after her and bulling her.
My
response : The trapped girl
I wanted to
produce dark and elegant images in the style of Noells. Oszvald for my
response. I used natural lighting as I felt it was much more vibrant. I places
a piece of material over my models head and start photographing her, in order
to see if I could capture any emotion, feelings and shapes through the light
material. I first of all started taking my photographs in the studio and
bringing a light for my model to hold, however this wasn’t successful as the
light did not come show, and when the light eventually started to show my model
would disappear. So I then removed my model from the studio and experimented with
using natural light which was much more successful. The light reflect off the material
a lot more and as a result the models face was not clear, which worked in my
favour as it started to create some elegant yet abstract images.
All of Noellss Oszvald photographs are taken in black and white,
and they are fairly simple. So I then started to edit my photographs and
converting them into black and white images. They appear to have improved and
project the message out a lot more. The use of the white fabric over the models
head may have a religious and cultural reference. I wanted to represent my
model in a cultural way in which she feel trapped in. She is looking out into
the distance trying to look to freedom however this fabric draped around her
head is stopping her suffocating her. The idea that the material is transparent
also demonstrates how she really feels as we as an audience can see her face
partially and the distressed emotions which she is representing in her face.
Hiding away |
Freedom |
For my next shoot I would like to experiment with using a white backdrop , and placing my light source behind the back drop to create a suttle and light effect. I will also try and use a an ironed fabric so we do not see the creases with in the fabric.
Experimenting with Fabric
I then tried to re-do the tapped girl shoot however,
I tried to use a white backdrop, I didn’t feel as thought this shoot was successful.
I placed my light source behind the backdrop so the light would shine through
and create a suttle effect. I then tried to re-do the tapped girl shoot however,

Cultural love
Bath Shoot
I experimented with taking the lighting kit
home again, and this time I wanted to explore water with in the house old, as I
felt it was successful before. I placed my model in the bath and again used mirrors
with in my shoot. I placed my light source slightly above my model so the light
came from above her and I used a white umbrella to reduce the harshness of the
light. My model appeared to look venerable and fairly elegant.Osvaldo’s images are all in black and white,
then reduced the vibrance in my own photographs as I felt it would display his
style however I chose to leave a light hint of colour as it created a dull mood
, which was something I was aiming to achieve in my work.
